Given a Lagrangian fibration f : X -> B of a compact hyper-Kähler manifold, understanding its codimension 1 fibers is the first step in its study. I will explain how the geometry of relative automorphism and Picard spaces provides a powerful tool to attack this problem. Global constraints from the compactness of X are less understood. Time permitting, I will also talk about work in progress in this direction.
