Life in Fine Hall Committee
The Princeton University Department of Mathematics strives to provide all undergraduate and graduate students, postdocs, visitors, faculty, and staff with the best possible environment to achieve success, growth, and self-fulfillment. Whether visiting Fine Hall for an afternoon or for many years, one’s time here should be positive, welcoming, and productive. The Life in Fine Hall Committee is advisory to the faculty and Chair and is charged with recommending the creation and modification of Department activities and suggesting changes that will foster the above goals. The Department recognizes that mathematical talent can be found within all groups throughout the world and that the path to becoming a mathematical researcher can be long and winding. One goal of the Horizon series is to acknowledge and celebrate these facts. Past speakers include a former NFL player, a former middle school teacher, people from socially and economically disadvantaged groups, and people who struggled as students. All these speakers became outstanding mathematical researchers.
The Department strives to bring the most mathematically talented people to Fine Hall as students, postdocs, and faculty. Consequently, our community comprises people from a vast range of backgrounds, experiences, and expectations. The Committee's goal is to make recommendations so that Fine Hall is a place where our differences are a positive, where we encourage each other through our example and action, where we treat each other respectfully and professionally, all so that we can realize our mathematical potential. We are united by our passion for mathematics.
This webpage is designed to keep everyone informed of the initiatives and activities being put in place. It is a work in progress as we try to address critical issues and get feedback from the community. We encourage everyone to contribute to this important work. The links in the menu on the left give specific information on progress and activities in Fine Hall and point to some of our long-term goals. We will update the webpage regularly as the extent of our efforts and guiding values are clarified.
