We will discuss a family of knots which generalize the notion of being slice, and highlight some connections between these knots and exotic smooth phenomena on 4-manifolds. We will give a general method for constructing knots in this family and show that these examples exhibit a wide range of interesting behaviors, answering an old problem. Finally, we will survey some current work in progress which seeks to broaden the connections between this family of knots and exotic smooth structures on 4-manifolds.
