The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters has awarded Gerd Faltings, who served on the mathematics department faculty from 1985 to 1994 the 2026 Abel Prize. Faltings is being recognized for his achievements in arithmetic geometry, a field that combines the study of numbers with the study of abstract geometric forms. The Abel Prize ceremony will take place on May 26, 2026, in the University Aula.
