The Mathematics Department has just been informed of the passing of Professor Emeritus John C. Moore, who died on January 1st at the age of 92. He was considered a leading figure in the areas of homotopy theory and homological algebra. Moore was born in Staten Island, New York, and received his B.A. in 1948 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his Ph.D. from Brown University in 1952. He joined the Princeton University Mathematics Department as an Instructor in 1952 and was eventually promoted to the rank of full Professor in 1961. He remained in that position until his retirement in 1989, at which time he accepted a half-time position at the Mathematics Department at the University of Rochester.
Moore advised 23 graduate students while at Princeton. He became a fellow of the American Mathematical Society in 2012.
