Seshadri constants were originally introduced by Demailly to measure the local positivity of ample line bundles and may be vaguely thought of as an algebraic version of curvature. In this talk, I will explain how they can be used to detect K-stability of Fano manifolds and thereby prove existence of K\"ahler-Einstein metrics in various cases.
