A major problem in four-manifold topology is to understand exotic structures on smooth four-manifolds, i.e. four-manifolds which are homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic. We will use some basic operations in low-dimensional topology to build new exotic smooth four-manifolds.  Along the way we develop some new invariants of four-manifolds coming from Floer homology that are different than the usual Seiberg-Witten or Donaldson invariants.

This is joint work with Adam Levine and Lisa Piccirillo.
