How do you measure the distance between exotic smooth structures on the same 4-manifold? One natural measure is the complexity of an h-cobordism between them. In this talk, I will describe some progress towards a conjecture that h-cobordisms with the fewest possible critical points must have their critical points appear in order of their index. Then I’ll present some implications for the study of exotic phenomena up to stabilization.
