We discuss the question of compactifying the moduli space of curves with a differential with prescribed multiplicities of zeroes and poles. We will review the motivations for this from Teichmuller dynamics and from moduli theory. We then describe the compactification by moduli of multi-scale differentials, constructed over the complex numbers, some of its geometric properties, and approaches to defining it in positive characteristic
