Linking numbers, Lie algebras, and the Jacobi relation

The Jacobi relation demands that a certain formal linear combination
of trivalent graphs vanishes. Trivalent graphs modulo the Jacobi
relation appear under many different guises in low dimensional
topology. In this talk, I will explain a few of these appearances and the
relationships between them.
