Gauge invariant quantities play a fundamental role for the linearized Einstein equations. We review some classical results, in particular the Teukolsky variables, and argue that two additional complex scalar gauge invariants together with the linearized Ricci tensor are sufficient to generate all local gauge invariants for the Kerr geometry. The additional invariants are in particular sensitive to mass and angular momentum perturbations.
