In this talk, we will discuss new ideas and techniques for producing positive Dehn twist factorizations of surface mapping classes, which yield novel constructions of various interesting symplectic and smooth 4-manifolds, such as symplectic Calabi-Yau surfaces and exotic rational surfaces, via Lefschetz fibrations and pencils. We will report on our progress and latest results in this multi-directional program.
