Graph colouring and Steenrod’s problem for Stanley-Reisner rings

-
Masahiro Takeda, Kyoto University

The question “What kind of rings can be represented as singular cohomology rings of spaces?” is a classic problem in algebraic topology posed by Steenrod. One of old approaches to this problem is to consider the Steenrod algebra action on rings. In this talk, we will define an algebraic version of the graph colouring, and consider the relation between this graph colouring and the Steenrod algebra action on Stanley-Reisner rings generated by degree 4 and 6 generators. This talk is based on a joint work with Donald Stanley.
