A mathematician muses on power outage

Humour, Mathematics

I love Eli Stein.

About 1 hour and 30 minutes into lecture today, the power went out in the room...

Stein: Well, this might bring us to end slightly earlier. But don't panic... yet, at least the alarm hasn't gone off.
Stein: (in a slightly lower tone) ...should be any minute now.
Stein: (Upon the rustling of students and the continuous failure of an alarm to go off, went outside the room to peek around) Funny, that sign is still lit.
Some student: Is is a power saving mode [for the room lights]?
Stein: I don't think so (looked outside again) the lit sign is the emergency exit sign, so I don't know whether it should be trusted. (looks out the window) And I think the power has went out for the entire university.
(Students turn, and agree that this indeed is the case as the lights are all out at Frist campus center)
Some student (presumeably not from this department): Oh no, would the trains still run? [Referring probably to the Dinky]
Stein: Oh, don't worry, the university is on its own power ... at least I think (looks at us, I confirmed that fact to him) ... (now relieved, sort of) I think we should continue ... it is a bit dark here.
Stein: (evidently distracted, looks out the window again) And those cars are still moving ... I guess they also have their own power ... and the pedestrians, they are still walking ...
Stein: (mutters) ... but I suppose the situation is the same in their case.
The power eventually did come back on and we did finish class rather uneventfully.
