Moment-angle manifolds and polytopes: from intersections of quadrics to functorial moment angle complexes and back

I will explain the construction of moment-angle manifolds as intersections of quadrics, which preceded their introduction in 1991 by Davis and Januszkiewicz. I will show the beginnings of a fruitful interaction between that concrete point of view of them and the most recent functorial one due to Bahri, Bendersky, Cohen and Gitler.
