Minimal surfaces in hyperbolic 3-space and renormalization of area

We discuss properties of complete minimal surfaces in H3 related to the renormalization of area. We study critical points and minimizers of the renoralized area functional, highliting analogies with the Willmore functional in E3. This is joint work with R. Mazzeo--open problems will also be presented.
