Hunting the smallest hyperbolic 3-manifold with Mom-technology

Finding the minimum-volume compact hyperbolic 3-manifold is a long-outstanding problem that seems at last to be coming to a close. This talk will discuss recent joint work with David Gabai and Rob Meyerhoff to prove that the Weeks manifold is the smallest such manifold, and furthermore to classify all one-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds with volume less than 2.848.
