Algebra I

(Replaces MAT322 beginning AY 2012-13)

Covers the basics of symmetry and group theory, with applications.  Topics include the fundamental theorem of finitely generated abelian groups, Sylow theorems, group actions and the representation theory of finite groups.

Description of classes

Classes Meet Tuesday and Thursday.


Recommended Reading: Galois Theory by David A. Cox.

Weekly readings and problem sets to be determined by instructor. Problem sets will account for 25% of the total course grade.

Placement and Prerequisites

MAT 202, 204, or 217 or permission of the instructor.
