Professor Amit Singer Named Moore Investigator in Data-Driven Discovery

Professor Amit Singer has been named one of 14 Moore Investigators in Data-Driven Discvoery by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. These five year grants aim to unlock the potential in the vast datasets of research today, “Science is generating data at unprecedented volume, variety and velocity, but many areas of science don’t reward the kind of expertise needed to capitalize on this explosion of information,” said Chris Mentzel, Program Director of the Data-Driven Discovery Initiative.

Putnam Math Competition Meeting September 30th.

The first meeting of the Putnam Math Competition is tonight with Professor Gunning at 7:30 in Fine Hall 214.


The William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition will be held Saturday
December 6th, in McDonnell A01.

For those interested in practicing their problem solving between now and
then, the math department will hold practice sessions. Anyone interested is

Professor Manjul Bhargava awarded the 2014 Fields Medal

Congratulations to Professor Manjul Bhargava, who has been awarded the 2014 Fields Medal for his contributions to number theory!

The Fields Medal is one of mathematics' most prestigious prizes. It is awarded every four years to between two and four mathematicians 40 years old and younger at the International Congress of Mathematicians. This year's congress is being held in Seoul, South Korea, where President Park Geun-hye presented Professor Bhargava with the citation and medal August 13th.

Professor Peter Sarnak Presented Honorary Doctorate by University of Witwatersrand

On July 2 the University of Witwatersrand conferred an honorary doctorate to Professor Peter Sarnak. Sarnak is an alumnus of the University of Witwatersrand, and the citation notes his contributions to the development of mathematics in South Africa. Professor Emeritus Harold W. Kuhn died on July 2, 2014

Professor Emeritus of Mathematical Economics Harold W. Kuhn died peacefully in his sleep on July 2, 2014 in New York City, where he and his wife, Estelle (nee Henkin) lived since 2005. He would have been 89 on July 29th.

Professor Emeritus John Conway awarded Doctor Honoris Causa by Universitatea Alexandru Ioan Cuza.

On Tuesday, June 24th Professor Emeritus John Conway was awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa by the Universitatea Alexandru Ioan Cuza. The conference and celebration in honor of Professor Conway marked the official opening of the Grigore Moisil Institute. For more information on the award, see the official citation here.

Andrei Pohoata '14 cited by USA Mathematical Olympiad

Andrei Pohoata '14 has been cited by the Mathematical Association of America for his work as a grader for the Mathematical Olympiad and for the two problems he submitted for the contest. The citation reads, "A primary purpose of the USAMO is to encourage young people to excellence in problem solving and encourage them to cintinue in mathematics as a career. Mr. Pohoata provides a wonderful role model as a mathematician who continues to be involved."
