Public Lecture: Jordan Ellenberg - How to Get Rich Playing the Lottery, December 11, 2014

The Mathematics Department and the Council on Science and Technology are pleased to announce a Public Lecture by Jordan Ellenberg, Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor of Mathematics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Professor Ellenberg's talk, "How to Get Rich Playing the Lotter* (*Will Not Actually Help You Get Rich Playing the Lottery)," will recount the story and the mathematics behind a student group at MIT that found a loophole in the Massachusetts Lottery's Cash WinFall game and pocketed over $3 million.

Barry Mazur Will Deliver the Minerva Lecture Series this October 14,15 & 17

Professor Barry Mazur will deliver the Fall 2014 Minerva Lecture Series. Mazur received his Ph.D. at Princeton in 1959 and is currently the Gerhard Gade University Profesor and Senior Fellow at Harvard. Mazur's reserach focuses on number theory, automorphic forms, and algebraic geometry. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and counts the Veblen, Cole and Steele prizes among his many accolades.

This year's lectures will be held on:
Tuesday, October 14 at 4:30 p.m.
Wednesday, October 15 at 4:30 p.m.
and Friday, October 17 at 4:30 p.m.

Professor Amit Singer Named Moore Investigator in Data-Driven Discovery

Professor Amit Singer has been named one of 14 Moore Investigators in Data-Driven Discvoery by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. These five year grants aim to unlock the potential in the vast datasets of research today, “Science is generating data at unprecedented volume, variety and velocity, but many areas of science don’t reward the kind of expertise needed to capitalize on this explosion of information,” said Chris Mentzel, Program Director of the Data-Driven Discovery Initiative.

The first meeting of the Putnam Math Competition is tonight with Professor Gunning at 7:30 in Fine Hall 214.


The William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition will be held Saturday
December 6th, in McDonnell A01.

For those interested in practicing their problem solving between now and
then, the math department will hold practice sessions. Anyone interested is
