Philip Holmes Receives 2013 AMS Steele Prize for Mathematical Exposition

Philip Homes and John Guckenheimer are receiving the 2013 AMS Leroy P. Steele Prize for Mathematical Exposition. Presented annually by the American Mathematical Society, the Steele Prize is one of the highest distinctions in mathematics. The prize will be awarded on Thursday, January 10, 2013, at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in San Diego. Guckenheimer is the A. R. Bullis Professor of Mathematics at Cornell University.

Professor Manjul Bhargava has been awarded the Infosys Prize 2012

Congratulations to Professor Manjul Bhargava, who has been awarded the Infosys Prize 2012 by the Infosys Science Foundation in Bangalor, India.

The Infosys Prize is awarded in recognition of "outstanding research contributions across six catagories: Engineering & Computer science, Humanities, Life Sciences, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences. Now in its fourth year, the Infosys Prize ranks among the highest monetary awards in India that recognizes scientific research."

Putnam Math Competition in Princeton on December 1st

The William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition will be held on Saturday, December 1st in Jadwin A10. The morning session begins at 10:00 am; but all participants should plan to be there at least 20 minutes before the session begins in order to check in.

There are a few openings for students who did not sign up for the competition; just appear and check in. The morning session ends at 1:00pm, and the afternoon session runs from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. No cell phones, computers, blackberries, cameras or other devices, or books or papers, are allowed in the examination room.

Zhiwei Yun (Ph.D. 2009) to be awarded the 2012 SASTRA Ramanujan Prize

The SASTRA Ramanujan Prize is awarded annually for outstanding contributions by young mathematicians to areas influenced by Srinivasa Ramanujan.  Zhiwei joins an impressive list of mathematicians, including the following who received their Ph.D. at Princeton: Terence Tao (Ph.D. 1996), Kannan Soundararajan (Ph.D. 1998), Manjul Bhargava (Ph.D. 2001), and Akshay Venkatesh (Ph.D. 2002).
