Professor Peter Sarnak to be awarded the 2014 Wolf Prize in Mathematics

Professor Peter Sarnak will be awarded this year's Wolf Prize in Mathematics, citing his impact on "the development of several mathematical fields, often by uncovering deep and unsuspected connections." The citation continues, "... By his insights and his readiness to share ideas he has inspired the work of students and fellow researchers in many areas of mathematics." The Mathematics Department welcomes Keith Devlin, Visiting Professor of Distinguished Teaching!

Professor Keith Devlin will join the Mathematics Department for the spring semester as the Stanley Kelley, Jr. Visiting Professor of Distinguished Teaching! Professor Devlin is a co-founder and Executive Director of the university's H-STAR institute, a co-founder of the Stanford Media Xresearch network, and a Senior Researcher at CSLI.

Watch George Hart's "Celebration of Mind" orb being assembled

At this year's Celebration of Mind event at Princeton, honoring the life of Martin Gardner, the artist George Hart led students and faculty in contstructing his "Celebration of Mind," an orb made of 60 identical pieces. Putnam Mathematical Competition to be held this Saturday, December 7th

The William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition will be held this Saturday December 7, in Fine Hall 314. 
The morning session begins at 10:00 am; but all participants should plan to be there at least 20 minutes before the session begins in order to check in.
The morning session ends at 1:00 pm, and the afternoon session runs from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
There are a few openings for students who did not sign up before the deadline for the competition;  just appear and check in.

Information session for Math Majors on UCLA Graduate Programs; Tuesday, November 26th

Math Seniors and Juniors,

Dr. Andrea Bertozzi is visiting from UCLA.  She directs the applied math graduate program there, and is a Princeton alumnae ('87 *91).  She would like to talk to current Princeton math majors about graduate school in general and about the program at UCLA (both pure and applied).

Dr. Bertozzi will host a PIZZA lunch in the PL at 12:30 Tues November 26.

Professor Alice Chang awarded Doctor Honoris Causa of Pierre and Marie Curie University

Congratulations to Professor Alice Chang, who was elected Doctor Honoris Causa of Pierre and Marie Curie University on November 13th! 

This degree is a mark of honorary distinction given to a scientist; it honors not only the scientific excellence of men and women, all of whom are involved in the advancement of science, but also their commitment to humanism and their contribution to the evolution of society as a whole. In honor of Dr. Chang and fellow honoree Conjeeveram Srirangachari Seshadri, a scientific conference was organized on November 14 at the University.

Congratulations to This Year's Graduate Student and Junior Faculty Teaching Award Winners!

This is the second year the “Department of Mathematics Graduate Teaching Award” has been given. Last year, it was awarded to Daniel Shenfeld. The award was created to recognize excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level. This year’s recipients are Owen Biesel and Andrew Manion. Owen received his Ph.D. in June; Andy is a current graduate student.
