Annual Teaching Awards Go To Sheridan, Stibitz, Velozo, and Vicol

The Department's annual teaching awards were announced at a special tea on Monday, October 10. This year's Junior Faculty Teaching Awards went to Assistant Professors Nicholas Sheridan and Vlad Vicol, and the Graduate Student Teaching Awards went to Charles Stibitz and Anibal Velozo.The awards are given by the senior faculty and are based largely on student evaluations.

Congratulations to This Year's Graduate Student and Junior Faculty Teaching Award Winners!

This is the second year the “Department of Mathematics Graduate Teaching Award” has been given. Last year, it was awarded to Daniel Shenfeld. The award was created to recognize excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level. This year’s recipients are Owen Biesel and Andrew Manion. Owen received his Ph.D. in June; Andy is a current graduate student.

Recent Ph.D. Grad. Jonathan Luk Presented Silver Prize of the New World Mathematics Awards

Jonathan Luk, who received his Ph.D. in Mathematics at Princeton in June, 2012, has been presented the Silver Prize of the New World Mathematics Awards (NWMA) for his thesis, Linear and nonlinear wave equations on black hole spacetimes (advisor: Igor Rodnianski).

Aaron Pixton Appointed to a Five-year Clay Research Fellowship

Congratulations to Aaron Pixton, a current 4th-year graduate student, who has been appointed to a five-year Clay Research Fellowship beginning September 1, 2013.

Aaron Pixton will receive his Ph.D. in 2013 from Princeton University under the supervision of Rahul Pandharipande. His research is in enumerative algebraic geometry. The topics he has worked on recently include the tautological ring of the moduli space of curves, moduli spaces of sheaves on 3-folds, and Gromov-Witten theory.

Zhiwei Yun (Ph.D. 2009) to be awarded the 2012 SASTRA Ramanujan Prize

The SASTRA Ramanujan Prize is awarded annually for outstanding contributions by young mathematicians to areas influenced by Srinivasa Ramanujan.  Zhiwei joins an impressive list of mathematicians, including the following who received their Ph.D. at Princeton: Terence Tao (Ph.D. 1996), Kannan Soundararajan (Ph.D. 1998), Manjul Bhargava (Ph.D. 2001), and Akshay Venkatesh (Ph.D. 2002).
