Limit multiplicities of cusp forms

We will consider towers of congruence subgroups of a semisimple Lie group and study the asymptotic behavior of multiplicities of irreducible representations of the Lie group occurring in the space of cusp forms with respect to a given  tower. First we will review what is known in general about the conjecture of de George and Wallach concerning limit multiplicities and then specialize to the case of the general linear group.
